HUNTING AND FISHING HERITAGE EXPO CONTEST KICKS OFF FOR WYOMING STUDENTS

CHEYENNE- The Wyoming Hunting & Fishing Heritage Expo Poster, Poetry and Essay competition for Wyoming students is now underway.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department's Expo is a free educational event for all ages and skill levels featuring outdoor activities like shooting, fishing, canoeing and archery.  The poster, poetry and essay competitions are one way students can get involved in the Expo and the bigger world of wildlife. This year’s Expo theme is “Our Wildlife, Our Kids, Our Future.”

“This is a great way to get youth to start thinking about wildlife conservation,” said Wendy Hayes, conservation education manager for the Game and Fish. “In this competition, students are asked to express what Wyoming’s outdoor heritage means to them, and actively participating in this contest encourages students to consider their own involvement in the world around them and their own conservation efforts.”

Any Wyoming student in grades 3-6 can take part by entering the poster competition, grades 7-9 can enter the poetry competition, and the essay portion of the competition is designed for grades 10-12. All entries must be received before 5 p.m. May 1, 2008.

All competition entries must integrate the theme into their product. The entries meeting the competition criteria will be displayed in Wyoming People, Places and Culture Gallery at the 2008 Expo, to be held Sept. 11-13, 2008 in Casper.

The first, second and third place winners in each category will receive a $200, $150 and $100 savings bond respectively. All winners will also receive an award ribbon, certificate, and complimentary one-year subscription to Wyoming Wildlife magazine. Winners will also be recognized at the Expo awards banquet.

The Expo offers more than 150 free activities, exhibits and demonstrations for all ages and skill levels, and is tied to the State Department of Education Content and Performance Standards in numerous academic disciplines.  More than 40,000 Wyoming students and teachers have taken advantage of this unique educational opportunity in the past ten years.

For more information on the Expo or the Poster, Poetry and Essay Contest, including contest entry forms, specific contest rules and submission procedures, call (888) EXPO WYO, or visit the Game and Fish Web site at http://gf.state.wy.us and click Education then Expo.

NEW DATES FOR 2008 WYOMING HUNTING & FISHING HERITAGE EXPO ANNOUNCED

CHEYENNE— Mark your calendars for the 2008 Wyoming Hunting & Fishing Heritage Expo.  Some scheduling changes to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s annual outdoor event should bring more participants than ever before.

The 2008 Expo will be held Thursday, Sept. 11 through Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008.

“We are moving the 2008 Expo one week later and making it a Thursday, Friday, Saturday event,” said Wendy Hayes, Conservation Education Manager for the Game and Fish. “We are hoping to accommodate and attract more schools with this change.”

Traditionally, the Expo has been held as a Friday through Sunday event, which only provided schools with one available day to attend. Now schools will have the option of attending on Thursday or Friday. In addition, the Expo was moved to one week later in September, to avoid conflicts with the start of school and the Labor Day holiday.

Hayes explained that because one of the goals of the Expo is to see as many Wyoming students as possible participate, the Expo Steering Committee and Advisory Board conducted a survey of teachers in Wyoming to determine what scheduling of the event would best accommodate most schools and decided on a different format for 2008.

“We believe offering students an additional weekday to attend and moving the Expo to later in September will allow more flexibility for schools to participate,” Hayes says.  “We also think this will help encourage more families to attend, because it won’t be back to back with Labor Day weekend.”

The Wyoming Hunting & Fishing Heritage Expo will be held in Casper at the Casper Event Center. The Expo hosts a variety of hands-on conservation education activities for youth and adults, including a bear trail, archery, canoeing, shooting clinics, historical presentations and much more.

The 2008 Expo will remain free and open to the public.  To become an Expo sponsor or volunteer, contact the Conservation Education office of the Game and Fish at (307) 777-4538.
